I brani (che troverai subito sotto) sono canzoni che hanno contraddistinto il suo lavoro con i Beatles, Wings e le sue registrazioni da solista. Vengono spiegate anche le parole di una canzone dei Beatles non registrata, “Tell Me Who He Is”, dei primi anni Sessanta; McCartney ha scoperto i testi scritti a mano in un taccuino durante la ricerca delle fonti per scrivere il libro.

“Molto spesso, mi è stato chiesto se avrei scritto un’autobiografia, ma non è mai stato il momento giusto”, ha scritto McCartney, che ora ha 79 anni, nella prefazione del libro. “L’unica cosa che sono sempre riuscito a fare, sia a casa che in viaggio, è scrivere nuove canzoni. So che alcune persone, quando raggiungono una certa età, amano scrivere un diario per ricordare gli eventi del passato, ma io non ho taccuini del genere in cui scrivere. Quello che ho sono le mie canzoni, centinaia, che ho imparato e hanno più o meno lo stesso scopo di un diario. E queste canzoni abbracciano tutta la mia vita”.
A partire dalla settimana di pubblicazione, la British Library di Londra ospiterà una mostra gratuita di testi e foto scritti a mano del cantautore. Lo showcase, soprannominato Paul McCartney: The Lyrics, sarà visibile dal 5 novembre al 13 marzo.
